For years, technology companies have been promoting the vision of aggregated computing power available on demand as the next step in the evolution of computers. Penguin and its subsidiary Scyld Software wanted to take advantage of their thought leadership potential by enhancing the visibility of CTO Donald Becker, one of the inventors of Beowulf Linux Clusters. These supercomputers are based on commodity hardware so it is challenging to differentiate vendor offerings, especially for a relatively smaller player. We helped Don articulate Scyld’s high performance computing (HPC) advantages so the internal marketing team could shape the discussion and definitions in the market place.
They had a valuable piece of web real estate: Beowulf.org that needed an overhaul: new architecture, new look, and simplified content management approach so it wasn’t dependent on Don’s day-to-day maintenance. We gave them a turnkey solution including freeform search capability for years of mailing list archives.
We were able to complement their in-house expertise in several ways. We prepared an analysis of Computer Aided Engineering markets for computational fluid dynamics and high fidelity finite element modeling and identified the sweet spots for their products. We reframed their solutions in the context of HPC customer needs for research, MCAE and informatic applications as well as key industry verticals: academia, government, life sciences, automotive, defense and aeronautics, and energy. We were also able to supplement their overburdened marketing team by facilitating definition, project management, and content development of their new corporate site so it could be completed internally.
